Chapter Seventeen

Lila

“So, I finally did it,” he said, shoving a strand of hair out of his eyes as we sat on the tailgate of his truck, staring down at the lights in Oakwood.

“Did what?” I asked, kicking my sandaled feet back and forth, looking up at the moon and the stars. It was beautiful out here in the park atop the town, not a soul in sight. It was our own private piece of land. It felt good to be alone with him.

“Wrote you that song you’d been asking for. I mean, I don’t think it’s that good, you know, but if you want to hear it…,” he said sheepishly.

I nudged him with my shoulder, the feel of his T-shirt scratchy on my bare shoulders and arms. “Of course I want to hear it! Oh my God, no one has ever written me a song.”

“Well, I’m glad I get to be the first.”

He flashed me that smile that could melt me no matter what was happening. I stared at him, the bite of the night air chilling me, but once his warm voice started singing in its gritty, raw style, I forgot about the chills and the mosquito biting my ankle. I forgot about work the next day and all the complexities of life. I forgot about everything except for Luke Bowman, the man who had swept me off my feet four months ago and had never let my feet touch the ground.

His lyrics echoed through the desolate park, and I hung on to every word about the streetlight and the first kiss. I blushed when he talked about the sexy blonde who’d saved his cat and helped him be a better man.

It was our story, and to others the song probably sounded odd. To me, though, it was a beautiful reminder of the surprises life and love sometimes brought you. I never in a million years thought I’d fall in love with that guy who brought in a dying cat that morning. Most of all, I never expected that four months later, I’d be sitting under the stars listening to him sing a song he’d written about our love story. I never thought I’d be so crazy about him so fast.

When he finished singing, the words came out before my rational self could step in. “I love you, soul mate.”

Once the last word was out, I froze, biting my lip. It was too much, too soon. It was cheesy. Soul mate? The word had just jumped off my tongue before I could stop it. This was it. I’d scared him.

Instead, though, he put down his guitar in the bed of the truck and leaned closer. He took my face in his hands. “I love you, too. Soul mate.”

And with that reflection of my words, I eased into myself, into the kiss he planted on me. There was a mutual understanding between us that our worlds had shifted and that our hearts were stuck to each other now. In four months, I’d gone from questioning if love was even real to believing this man was my soul mate.
